Canada Wins Gold!

Canada’s Olympic gold medal drought at home is finally over. Fans chanted ”Canada! Canada!“ as freestyle skier Alexandre Bilodeau won the men’s moguls at the Vancouver Olympics. It’s the first time Canada has won a gold medal at its own Games. The 22-year-old from Rosemere, Quebec took top spot over second-place defending champion Dale Begg-Smith — a Canadian-born skier who now competes for Australia. Canada failed to make it to the top of the podium in Montreal in 1976 and Calgary in 1988. Bilodeau, who was ranked fourth heading into the Games, threw his arms in the air in celebration as he stepped on the podium after the event. He tells C-T-V that the win is just too good to be true — but he predicts it will be just the first of more golds to come. Vincent Marquis of Quebec City was fourth followed by Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau of Drummondville, Quebec in fifth. Rousseau says he’s really proud that Bilodeau won the first gold medal for Canada on home turf. Bilodeau’s gold follows the silver won by teammate Jennifer Heil of Spruce Grove, Alberta yesterday and the bronze won earlier today by long-track speedskater Kristina Groves of Ottawa.
